Haredi minister causes offense by dancing to anti-Israel song
Housing Minister Yitzhak Goldknopf was filmed attending a wedding on Sunday, surrounded by ultra-Orthodox men dancing in a circle singing, "We'll die and not enlist [in the IDF]," and a popular song in Haredi circles that says the secular rule is not to be trusted and their governance to be avoided. So let me get this straight. If the groom and family wish to offend wider segments of society, that's okay? Ugh. That's what Goldknoph is implying, based on his failure to argue that celebrating such a song could cause a whole PR catastrophe, which he's now reaping the results of. His claim of incitement is backhanded and only obscures the serious subject at hand.
The video sparked outrage across the political spectrum. Members of the coalition urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to remove Goldknopf from his ministerial post.
Following the backlash, Goldknopf distanced himself from the song's content but claimed the video was being used to incite against him. "The attempts to divide and sow conflict never stop," he wrote on his X account.
"I attended a family wedding where, during the dancing, the music changed to a song that I strongly disapprove of. To avoid offending the groom and his family, I remained in place. Unfortunately, some have exploited this to incite against me, as if I support the song's message. So let me be clear: I reject and condemn it,” he added.
Goldknopf has partially resigned from one of his positions, but not entirely from the government itself. And making matters worse, it turns out he oversaw discriminatory sales of housing projects to Haredis, and not to army veterans, as was the original goal. The Jerusalem Post editorial is calling for Goldknopf's resignation, and he should leave politics altogether, after all these huge embarrassments he's causing, which only take away attention from more vital issues like the threat of Islamic terrorism. Tragically, that's exactly what movements like Neturei Karta want to do, and exactly why their clan must be dissolved somehow.
